Event Details
Reading a copy of My Side of the Mountain prepared by the Summit County Library is required to attend this event.
Come join this adventurous rendition of Rocky Mountain Readers! The club will meet on October 19 to discuss My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. This event is recommended for children in upper elementary and middle school. Younger readers are allowed, and reading aloud is encouraged, but please make sure everyone in your group is capable of the hike.
After reading about Sam Gribley's adventure in the Catskilll Mountains of New York, readers and their parents can join Maddie from the Friends of the Dillon Ranger district for an edible plants hike. Learn what foods could sustain you through the Rocky Mountain winter or on a summer hike gone awry. Readers and their parents will hike the Burro Trail from the Beaver Run/Peak 9 parking lot. The out-and-back hike will take approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, and will be less than 2 miles with plenty of breaks. Come dressed for the outdoors, including jackets and hiking shoes. Please bring your own water bottles.
The Breckenridge Free Ride "Ice Rink" bus loop is the nearest bus option. Get on and off at the Beaver Run Down Hill bus stop, just west of the Beaver Run Parking Lot.
Books are available for checkout during the months of September and October at any Summit County Library. Books are chosen for upper elementary and early middle school students, but reading aloud for younger children is encouraged.
Parents or guardians are required for this event.
